Tears and Legacy at Jio’s Listing
Jio Platforms’ stock market debut on October 28 was as much a family milestone as a financial one. Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani was visibly moved, wiping away tears as his children Isha and Anant addressed the gathering in Mumbai.
Isha Ambani took the audience back to 1977. She recalled her father telling her how, at 20, he had worked on Reliance’s very first public offering. Nearly five decades later, his children were celebrating the listing of the group’s digital arm.
Anant Ambani spoke of gratitude to the millions who believed in Jio, describing it as something shared with India and calling business a form of worship.
The occasion had plenty to celebrate. Jio Platforms completed a Rs 30,188 crore IPO, the largest in India so far, and its shares listed at a premium of more than 21%.
Analysis: The emotional scenes underlined a carefully planned succession. Mukesh Ambani is dividing his roughly $170 billion empire into three businesses: Akash leads Jio, Isha retail and Anant energy. By stepping back from the spotlight, he signaled confidence in the handover.
Isha’s reference to 1977 was more than nostalgia. Linking Reliance’s first public issue to Jio’s listing framed the IPO as a continuation of the family’s long relationship with retail investors, a message aimed at the new shareholders who rushed into the offering.
The real test begins now. Sentiment helped make the debut memorable, but public-market investors will judge the next generation on execution: growth in 5G, broadband, AI and enterprise services, quarter after quarter.
