Despite accelerating investments in artificial intelligence, 44% of CEOs struggle to demonstrate measurable financial returns from AI initiatives, according to Gartner’s 2027 CEO Survey. The findings highlight a widening gap between AI adoption and business value.
Conducted among 203 global CEOs and senior executives, the survey reveals that 62% prioritize revenue growth, while 75% plan to increase technology investments, reinforcing AI’s growing importance in corporate strategy.
Interestingly, 80% of CEOs believe technology has become central to business strategy. Organizations increasingly view AI not merely as an efficiency tool but as a catalyst for competitive differentiation, innovation and market expansion.
However, uncertainty remains a major challenge. Gartner reports that 93% anticipate significant economic volatility, 79% expect geopolitical conflicts to disrupt business objectives, and 77% foresee challenges arising from AI industrialization through 2027.
To unlock financial returns, 63% of CEOs advocate radically redesigning operating models, while 52% favour deploying autonomous AI agents as digital employees. Another 47% consider restructuring businesses and reallocating capital toward emerging opportunities.
The findings signal a fundamental transformation in enterprise leadership. CIOs must evolve beyond technology implementation to become strategic architects, aligning AI investments with revenue generation, operational resilience and measurable business outcomes.
The larger challenge is converting AI experimentation into sustainable profitability. Enterprises that redesign workflows, establish accountability and measure AI-driven outcomes will gain competitive advantage. Ultimately, AI success will depend less on technology spending and more on transforming business models to deliver tangible financial value.
