An IndiGo flight travelling from New Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after a passenger's power bank reportedly caught fire inside the aircraft's overhead luggage compartment.
Flight 6E 6115, operated by an Airbus A321neo, experienced smoke and flames originating from a personal electronic device during the journey, triggering an immediate emergency response.
The cabin crew acted swiftly, deploying onboard fire extinguishers to contain the flames and prevent the situation from escalating into a serious aviation emergency.
Meanwhile, the pilots initiated a precautionary diversion to Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, prioritising passenger safety and aircraft security.
The aircraft landed safely, with all passengers and crew members reportedly escaping injuries.
IndiGo subsequently arranged an alternative aircraft and provided refreshments to the affected travellers.
The incident highlights growing aviation safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries, particularly overheating and thermal runaway risks associated with portable charging devices.
The incident underscores the importance of battery safety regulations, proper device storage and trained cabin crews in preventing potentially catastrophic in-flight emergencies.
