Iran Threatens Gulf AI and Data Centres
Iran has warned that American-linked data centres, artificial intelligence facilities and undersea communication cables across the Gulf could become military targets if conflict with the United States and Israel resumes. The warning introduces a dangerous dimension to modern warfare.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, indicated that Tehran could expand retaliatory operations beyond conventional military installations. Iran argues that economic infrastructure supporting its adversaries cannot remain immune while Iranian assets face attacks.
The threat carries significant implications for Saudi Arabia, the UAE and neighbouring Gulf economies investing billions in hyperscale computing, sovereign AI and cloud infrastructure. These facilities increasingly support banking, telecommunications, government services and international commerce.
Recent attacks have already demonstrated the vulnerability. Amazon Web Services facilities in the UAE and Bahrain suffered physical damage during earlier hostilities, highlighting how military strikes can disrupt cloud services without conventional cyberattacks.
Iranian officials have also discussed targeting submarine internet cables. Although the Strait of Hormuz carries less than 1% of international bandwidth, regional disruptions could affect financial transactions, cloud connectivity and digital services.
The strategic concern extends beyond infrastructure destruction. Disruptions could undermine investor confidence, increase insurance costs and complicate the Gulf's ambition to become a global AI hub. Civilian facilities remain protected under international humanitarian law unless they qualify as military objectives.
For India and global enterprises, the warning reinforces the urgency of geographically distributed infrastructure, independent backups, alternative connectivity and disaster recovery. Digital sovereignty alone cannot guarantee resilience. The future of AI infrastructure depends equally on cybersecurity, physical protection and geopolitical stability.
