Apple’s long-awaited first foldable, the iPhone Duo, had barely reached buyers before it was jailbroken, a striking reminder that even Apple’s most advanced, security-hardened hardware is not immune to a determined hacker.
The device launched on Friday, October 23, 2026, and within hours the hacking team Calif announced it had breached it, posting the feat on X. Security researcher Stefan Esser, who discussed the work with German outlet Heise, lent the claim credibility.
The jailbreak was demonstrated on an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1. Calif did not detail the exact exploit chain, but the group’s closely related work a week earlier, an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1, showed the device rebooting with full root access afterward.
In the Duo demonstration, Calif showed off its control by rearranging the home-screen icons and widgets and even planting an anime character on the display, playful proof of deep system access on Apple’s newest form factor.
One notable wrinkle: Esser said AI helped develop the jailbreak, though he did not explain how, echoing a wider 2026 trend of AI accelerating both offensive and defensive security research.
There is reassurance for ordinary users. Calif has not publicly released the jailbreak, and Esser said there will be no tool for end users, though a proof of concept may follow. The group is also disclosing the underlying bugs to Apple responsibly.
Crucially, Esser noted that most of the vulnerabilities are already fixed in the upcoming iOS 27.2 update. Until that ships, devices on iOS 27.0.1 and 27.1 remain theoretically exposed. Apple has not publicly commented.
Ultimately, a launch-day jailbreak is less a crisis than a rite of passage, but it underscores how quickly a brand-new, premium device can be probed, and how AI is sharpening the tools on both sides of that contest.
