US to close 800 computer data centers

The United States government will be closing down 40 per cent of its computer data centers by 2015 to reduce spending and step up its technology infrastructure. As per market report, this figure breaks down to roughly 800 data centers out of the 2,000 currently open nationwide and the closure would save $3 billion.
The federal government is the largest buyer of information technology in the world, spending about $80 billion a year, according to the report.
Vivek Kundra, Chief Information Officer for the federal government, explained that the data center consolidation was part of a broader strategy to embrace more efficient, Internet-era computing.
